Dentures

Missing most or all of your teeth can hurt your ability to chew and speak, and can make you feel self-conscious about your smile. You don't need to live with missing teeth. A denture from Brooklyn Heights Dental® can bring back your smile. Learn how our Brooklyn Heights, NY, dentists can give you the best denture for your unique needs.

You're Not Alone Many Experience Tooth Loss

Complete Tooth Loss Impacts 36 Million People Across the United States
Are you missing all of your natural teeth? So are 36 million others in the United States. To put that in perspective, our country has a population of about 334 million people. Like them, you can find your smile again with full dentures.

The Benefits of Dentures

Visiting our Brooklyn Heights, NY, dentist for your dentures has advantages like:

Healthier Appearance

In addition to returning your full smile, dentures help keep your cheeks and lips from sagging, giving your face a fuller, younger appearance.

Better Diet

Miss apples, carrots, and almonds? Dentures allow you to eat healthy, crunchy foods like raw vegetables, fruits, and nuts again.

Improved Speech

Since the tongue touches the teeth during speech, missing teeth can make your speech slurred and prevent you from making certain sounds.

Boosted Confidence

Missing even one tooth, let alone several, can make you self-conscious. A full, healthy-looking smile can bring that confidence back.

Prevent Jaw Atrophy with Dental Implants

Missing tooth roots can cause your jawbone to weaken. If you choose an implant-supported denture, the implants will help keep your jawbone strong and healthy.

Preserve Remaining Teeth

If you have a few remaining teeth, a partial denture can help distribute chewing forces more evenly to prevent excessive pressure and wear on your natural teeth.

Types of Dentures

Our Brooklyn, NY, dental practice offers several types of dentures to suit your individual dental needs and budget.

Traditional Dentures

Dentures are custom-made, removable replacements for a full arch of missing teeth. The base of upper dentures covers the roof of the mouth and the gums. Lower dentures are horseshoe-shaped, to provide room for the tongue. Traditional dentures can be held in place with a combination of suction and dental adhesive applied to the gums.

Partial Dentures

Partial dentures fill the gaps in a dental arch, and help keep your remaining teeth from shifting position. Unlike bridges, partial dentures are removable and can be designed to replace any missing teeth in your dental arch. Partial dentures are held in place by a metal framework that attaches to your remaining natural teeth.

More About Partial Dentures

Implant-Supported Dentures

Implant-supported dentures are restorations attached to dental implants, which are replacement tooth roots made from titanium. Dental implants are surgically placed in the jawbone. Following surgery, they fuse with your bone tissues. This gives implant-supported restorations unmatched stability compared to other dentistry options.

Getting Used to Dentures

Partial or complete dentures may feel odd for the first few weeks until you are used to wearing them. To help adjust to your new dentures:

  • Stick to small bites of soft foods, and especially avoid hard or sticky foods.
  • Practice speaking by repeating tricky words until you are confident, or by singing along to your favorite songs.
  • If your traditional dentures slip out of place, reposition them by biting down and swallowing.
  • Give the muscles in your cheeks and tongue time to learn how to hold your new denture in place.

How Long Do Dentures Last?

The lifespan of dentures varies depending on the type of restoration and how it is cared for. Full dentures typically last between five and 10 years, and well-maintained partial dentures can last for up to 15 years. The prosthetic teeth of an implant-supported denture may last up to 20 years, while the implants themselves can last a lifetime.

If you wear traditional (non-implant) dentures, they may eventually need new material added to the underside of the base to ensure a close fit as the bone tissue of the jaw changes over time. This process is called relining. A denture may also need to be rebased, which is when a new base is created for the prosthetic teeth from your old denture.

Caring for Your Dentures

Before you leave our Brooklyn Heights, NY, practice, our dentist will guide you through the ins and outs of denture care. The tips Dr. Stanislaus and Dr. Reid offer may depend on the type of dentures you have, like partial dentures or implant-supported dentures. Here's a quick guide to good denture maintenance.

Traditional and Partial Dentures

Brush dentures daily to remove food, plaque, and stains. Use a soft-bristled toothbrush or a brush made specifically for dentures. Both traditional and partial dentures break easily when dropped, so stand over a folded towel or sink filled with water when handling your denture. The acrylic used in dentures becomes brittle when dry, so always submerge your denture in water or denture cleaner solution when you are not wearing it.

Implant-Supported Dentures

In large part, implant-supported dentures can be cared for just like you care for your natural teeth. A water flossing device can help clean areas that are hard to reach, such as between the restoration and gums. Some water flossing devices come with brushes specifically meant for dental implants. Visit your dentist twice a year so they can thoroughly clean the denture and monitor the condition of the implants.

New York's Choice For Compassionate Care

"Every time I leave BHD, I'm happier than when I walked in (I can't believe I'm saying this about a dental appointment!!). Mariana and the team always make me feel really welcome and I've never had to wait.  Gisella always does such a gentle, yet very thorough cleaning and exam, and it's followed by an always lovely, brief chat with Dr. Stanislaus or Dr. Reid, who are demonstrably genuinely interested in my life (and of course my teeth).  I get authentically wished well on my way out every time...I can't say enough about how good it feels to actually really enjoy going to the dentist and trusting that I'm in great hands!" The service was excellent from the moment I entered the office. Until I left. The greeting on arrival was lovely. Dr Stanislaus assistant was amazing. He was fantastic. Great relaxing music! I am a gynecologist and was in the Operating Room from 7:30 am. I was tired when I got to the office. I slept for 75% of the time while Dr Stanislaus did my procedure. He was efficient and absolutely mastered his craft. I was very happy with the care. I didn’t need not one of the Motrin that I was prescribed. Thanks to the entire team His daughter was caring, kind and made the process quite smooth ❤️

The most detailed and comprehensive dental visit I’ve ever experienced! Everyone was so pleasant, helpful and patient. All of my questions were answered thoroughly and easy to understand. They took their time actually cleaning my teeth. I didn’t know what a true teeth cleaning was until I went here. Although somewhat sad lol, I’m happy I found a dentist office that takes real pride in what they do! They made me feel so comfortable. The fact that I didn’t leave feeling like my needs were not met, is a sign I’m in fantastic hands. I promise you will not be disappointed!
