Tooth Extraction
A Closer Look at Tooth Extraction
Can the Tooth Be Replaced?
Bridges
Traditional dental bridges can replace a single tooth or several teeth in a row. They consist of artificial teeth supported by dental crowns, which are attached to the teeth on either side of the gap. Our Brooklyn practice uses CEREC® technology that can craft a bridge on the spot.
Implants
Dental implants are titanium devices placed into the jawbone to replace lost tooth roots. Artificial teeth attach to the implants, creating a stable and natural-looking restoration. A single missing tooth can be replaced by a dental implant with a crown, and multiple teeth can be replaced by an implant-supported bridge or denture.
Dentures
Traditional full and partial dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth. Partial dentures fill the gaps in your smile and attach to your remaining teeth, while full dentures replace your entire dental arch and are held in place by dental adhesive and suction.
Why Should I Consider Dental Implants?
Restorations supported by implants are the replacement option closest to natural teeth. This solution is what we recommend for qualified candidates. Important reasons to consider dental implants include:
- Dental implants act as artificial tooth roots, providing crucial stimulation to the jawbone that prevents atrophy.
- Unlike traditional bridges that require crowns, implant-supported restorations don't require any alterations to your healthy teeth.
No other option provides the same comprehensive benefits as dental implants.

"I Felt Very Welcomed From the Moment I Walked In."
I highly recommend Dr. Stanislaus and his staff. I have been going there since mid-January 2021 when I was looking for a COVID-safe dental practice. The office has excellent ventilation, HEPA filtration, and cleaning practices. The exam rooms are sunny. The staff are uniformly friendly, efficient, and capable. They treat the patients, and each other, with respect. The atmosphere is calm and reassuring.
The practice is very available for urgent problems. Even for my first appointment for a toothache, when I was not yet their patient, I was scheduled to be seen quickly.
I had a great experience at Brooklyn Heights Dental. I generally hate going to the dentist but this was an efficient and easy visit. I did not wait long to be seen, and the staff was extremely welcoming and kind. The hygienist was very empathetic to a couple sensitive areas, and I had a very pleasant experience. Highly recommend.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare
Your dentist will send you home with specific recovery instructions, but the following tips will help you heal:
Immediately following extraction:
- Apply ice for 10 minutes at a time to reduce swelling.
- For the first few hours, occasionally bite down on the gauze pads to help blood clot formation. Replace gauze if it becomes soaked with blood.
- Take painkillers or antibiotics as prescribed.
- Relax and limit activity.
- Eat soft foods like soup, pudding, yogurt, or applesauce.
- Do not rinse, spit, or use a straw for the first 24 hours to aid clot formation.
- Avoid smoking or consuming alcohol, which impedes the healing process.
During the next several days:
- You may rinse your mouth using a half-teaspoon of salt dissolved in 8 ounces of warm water.
- Brush and floss as normal, but stay away from the extraction site to avoid dislodging the clot.
- Keep avoiding smoking and alcohol.
- Introduce solid foods when the extraction site sufficiently heals.
Dry Socket A Rare But Urgent Complication
After a tooth is extracted, a blood clot forms at the extraction site and protects the gum and bone tissue as it heals. Dry socket occurs when the blood clot is prematurely dislodged, usually a few days after extraction.
This painful condition exposes the nerves and bone tissue and leaves them vulnerable to infection. Call our Brooklyn Heights office at (718) 857-6639 right away if you suspect you have dry socket after tooth extraction.
How Much Does Tooth Extraction Cost?
Tooth extraction is usually covered by insurance. Simple extractions are relatively inexpensive. Extractions requiring oral surgery or using sedation will be more expensive. We offer flexible financing to help keep costs affordable for our patients in Brooklyn Heights, Fort Greene, and across Brooklyn and New York City.
