Dental Bridges

Even if you are missing just a few teeth, an incomplete smile makes it difficult to eat, speak, and feel confident. Dental bridges can replace lost teeth and restore your ability to chew, enunciate, and feel great about your smile. Brooklyn Heights Dental® in Brooklyn, NY, offers both traditional and bone-preserving implant-supported dental bridges.

What is a Dental Bridge?

A dental bridge is a restoration that uses artificial teeth, called pontics, to fill the gap left by missing teeth. Dental bridges can be used to replace a single tooth or several teeth in a row. We provide two different types of bridges:

  • A traditional bridge consists of two crowns (dental "caps")  that are attached to natural teeth on either side of the gap. These crowns hold artificial teeth between them to replace the missing teeth.
  • An implant-supported bridge is supported by dental implants, which are small titanium posts surgically inserted into the jaw to replace lost tooth roots.

Drs. Eugene D. Stanislaus and Lisa Reid at Brooklyn Heights Dental® in Brooklyn, NY, are experts in restoring lost teeth and offer both traditional and implant-supported bridges to give dental patients choices that fit their lifestyle and budget.

A Closer Look at Dental Bridge Options

Traditional Dental Bridges

Traditional dental bridges are a fast and affordable dental solution for missing teeth. Depending on the restoration material used in your bridge, you could be in and out in one appointment with a restored smile and better bite. By using advanced CEREC® technology, Drs. Stanislaus and Reid can design and create your bridge on the spot.

While traditional bridges are more economical, there are some downsides. Two natural teeth on either side of the gap need to be altered in order to hold the bridge, a task dentists prefer to avoid since it introduces a greater risk to these teeth in the future. Also, due to a lack of a tooth root, the bone tissue under the bridge will gradually recede.

Implant-Supported Bridges

Implant-supported bridges provide a number of advantages over traditional bridges. Not only are nearby teeth preserved, but the dental implant plays an important role in stimulating bone growth in your jaw and keeping it strong. The implant can last for decades, or even a lifetime, so you will only have to periodically replace the bridge due to normal wear and tear.

If you are looking to replace just one tooth, you will need only one implant holding a crown to fill the gap. If you are missing more than one tooth, two implants will be used to support the bridge at either end. Should you have a long stretch of missing teeth, additional implants can be used to support the extra load.

I had to make an emergency visit to these folks - not my regular dentist - just before a holiday weekend. They were kind, gracious, and attentive and took good care of my tooth.

Are You Interested in Implant-Supported Bridges?

Implant-supported bridges are the closest thing to having your natural teeth back. The treatment time is longer, but implant-supported bridges offer benefits that can last a lifetime. Drs. Stanislaus and Reid at Brooklyn Heights Dental® both have the advanced training you want in your dentist if you are considering an implant solution for missing teeth.

How a Traditional Dental Bridge Is Placed

After adjacent teeth are prepared for crowns, the restoration is crafted according to impressions of your bite for a precise fit.

Treatment Timeline for Traditional Dental Bridges

If dental treatments make you nervous, we offer sedation options that will put you at ease.

Day of Procedure

If dental treatments make you nervous, we offer sedation options that will put you at ease.

Tooth Preparation

The dentist will numb the treatment area and ensure you are comfortable before reshaping the teeth that will support the traditional dental bridge. This will create a "seat" on your natural teeth for the crowns holding the bridge in place.

Impressions

The dentist will take a digital or traditional physical impression of the treatment area to design your bridge out of high-quality dental materials. If you are receiving a same-day restoration, your bridge will be designed and milled using our advanced CEREC machine while you wait. Some dental materials require your bridge to be sent to our trusted lab for fabrication. In that case, we will place a temporary bridge and you will return in a couple of weeks for the permanent bridge.

Placing the Bridge

The dentist will test the bridge in your mouth, making adjustments as necessary to ensure a comfortable fit and bite. Once you and the dentist are satisfied with the results, it will be secured in place.
