Who Is a Candidate for CEREC Dental Restoration?
CEREC technology is a revolutionary new way to create custom dental crowns, porcelain veneers, inlays, and onlays. It saves dentists and their patients a great deal of time, and it is a highly convenient way to perform various cosmetic and restorative dentistry procedures.
Brooklyn Heights Dental® is proud to offer CEREC dental restorations. Since a number of people are unsure of what CEREC is and what it can do, we want to go over some basics and then discuss who might benefit from having a CEREC restoration placed.
What Is CEREC Technology?
In the past to make these kinds of custom dental restorations, dentists would need to send impressions to a dental lab. Up to two weeks would pass before the finished restoration arrived at the practice.
With CEREC, the wait is just an hour or so. In essence, CEREC technology brings the dental lab to the practice, with the crown, veneer, inlay, or onlay created in a small, convenient milling unit.
How Does CEREC Technology Work?
First things first, a patient's teeth are prepped to receive the dental restoration. For dental crowns, inlays, and onlays, this means the removal of damaged tooth structure. For porcelain veneers, this means the removal of a small sliver of tooth structure from the front of a tooth.
Next, a digital impression is taken of the prepped tooth. This information is sent to a computer where we can custom design the restoration. Minor adjustments are considered to optimize the fit and comfort of the restoration.
The dental restoration is then crafted on-site through the CEREC unit, milled from a strong block of dental ceramic. In just a little bit of time, the tooth-colored custom restoration is ready to be placed.
General Candidacy for CEREC Dental Restorations
Good candidates for CEREC restorations are people who require the following types of dental restorations:
- Porcelain veneers
- Inlays
- Onlays
- Dental crowns
Theses patients should be eligible to receive tooth-colored restorations to address their dental problems. Patients who require metal restorations will not benefit from CEREC technology.
Excellent for Treating Damaged Teeth
CEREC is an excellent option for treating damaged or flawed teeth. People who suffer from tooth decay, tooth fractures, and acidic erosion can all benefit from CEREC dental restorations. If there is a significant yet predominantly cosmetic problem that affects a person's smile, porcelain veneers created through CEREC technology may be just what's needed.
Not an Option If You Require a Root Canal
While CEREC restorations are durable and versatile, sometimes there are limitations to consider. If you are undergoing root canal therapy, you may not be an ideal candidate for CEREC restorations. Traditional fillings or crowns may be better given the nature of the procedure and what may be required to ensure the infection of the tooth is under control.
